In this edition of Get to Know Your Running Clubs we chatted with Al White, former president and all-around ombudsman of the Evanston Running Club. The Evanston Running Club can usually be found running around beautiful Lake Michigan. Sometimes up the Northshore; sometimes south into Chicago, but almost always within sight of the lake.

Hi Al! Tell us a bit about Evanston Running Club's history.

The Evanston Running Club was established in 1973-1974 by a few folks running the dreadmills at the Y who wanted to get outside and find others to run with... now we're approaching 500 memberships!

That's so great! Tell us a bit about your members! What level of runners do you cater to?

The gamut, from top age-group racers to beginners and lots in between.

Where/when does your club usually meet/run?

Too many to list... we have group runs pretty much every day.

Are your group runs mostly casual or more structured workouts?

Mix of casual runs and structured workouts.

Any cost to be a member/join?

$25 for individual; $35 for families, $15 for students... per year!

Is your group affiliated with any events?

There are several local races we strongly promote: Ricky Byrdsong Race Against Hate (YWCA), Northwestern Athletics Run for Walk, Stand Up 4 Youth, Evanston Flying Turkey, plus our own Mothers and Others (day) Walk/Run and Club Cross-Country Invitational Races in Harms Woods.

Any cool routes/ favourite areas to run in your city that you would like to recommend to other runners? Why do you like those?

Lakefront... because it's there!

Anything else that we should know?

Don't miss our Track Workouts in the Summer (at Evanston Township High School)... 75-100 folks all running left-turns!
