In this edition of Get To Know Your Running Clubs we spoke with the Karl Shen, the director of events for Lapower Running Club. Want to learn more about them? Read on!
Tell us a bit about your club history, how long has the club been around?
LaPower was established in 2014 as a non-profit organization and formed in the Chinese community. The mission of the club is to promote a healthy lifestyle and engage more people in our weekly activities as well as the local running events.
Tell us a bit about your members! What level of runners do you cater to?
Currently we have over six hundred members across the Greater Vancouver from ages twenty to sixty. We usually use the Chinese social media "Wechat" to communicate. We have five groups from different cities that run together in Vancouver, Richmond, Burnaby, White Rock and Coquitlam.
Our members include people just starting to run to serial marathoners. We had sixty members participate in the BMO Vancouver International Marathon 2017.
Where/when do you usually meet/run?
We have weekly running sessions in each of the five cities.
Vancouver: UBC - Tuesday 7:00 PM and Sunday 8:00AM
Burnaby: Deer Lake - Saturday 9:00 AM
TBD - Thursday 7:00PM
Richmond: Minoru Park - Tuesday 7:00PM
TBD - Sunday 9:00AM
White Rock: Centennial Park - Wednesday 9:30AM
Please check out our website http://www.lapowerrun.com to find the schedule in details or send us an email for inquiry.
Any cost to be a member/join?
Our club has no membership fee. Joining our club is free, as our club is sponsored by Concord Pacific.
Any cool routes/ favourite areas to run in your city that you would like to recommend to other runners?
The route starting from the Concord Pacific Head Office, through False Creek, English Bay, the Stanley Park Seawall to the BC Convention Center is a course we love. The scenery is amazing!
Do you have any favorite local races?
The Boundary Bay Marathon Relay. We participated with nine teams in 2016 and placed in second, third, fourth, fifth and sixth.
Anything else that we should know?
More than just running, we also have our LaPower volunteer team to support local big events such as the BMO Marathon and the Scotiabank Half-marathon.
