In this edition of Get To Know Your Running Clubs we spoke with Runners' Choice Waterloo, an independently owned store, specializing in running, walking, and triathlon footwear, apparel, and accessories with the goal of building community and promoting healthy, active lives.. You'll most often find the Runners' Choice Waterloo Run Club keeping pace in Uptown Waterloo.

Tell us a bit about your club history, how long has the club been around?
Our run groups have been established for 22 years and found a home at Runners' Choice 20 years ago!
Tell us a bit about your members! What level of runners do you cater to?
We have five different run groups to meet a wide range of running interests and experiences!
Our Let's Start Running is a great introductory group for people who've never run, who took a hiatus from running, or are coming back from injury! Let's Start Running focuses on a progressive build up and by the end of the clinic, the goal is to run 5km. Some members choose to participate in a local goal road race as motivation. We usually have 3-4 Let's Start Running Clinics per year.
We also have a Fun Run group that runs year-round (even through the blistery winters) from the store every Monday and Thursday which is open to all-comers! This is often the group our Let's Start Running members graduate to and they run between 5-10km
Tuesday evenings are for the trails! This group meets at a local high school on the west side of Waterloo to hit the trails.
Wednesday evenings we have a growing group for some high-quality tempo workouts! This group is for a more experienced runner looking to get some speed and hill workouts mixed in to their regular running routine!
Twice a year, we have clinics for marathon and half marathon runners. These programs span a few months building into the more popular marathon seasons. If you've never run a marathon or half marathon, this group provides coaching, programming, goal-setting, and company which makes those long runs more enjoyable!
Where/when does your club usually meet/run?
Most of our groups meet and run from our store location at 55 Erb Street East, Waterloo. However, our Tuesday Trail group meets at a local high school for easier access to some trails. Our marathon group mostly meets at the store but will meet at the local indoor track for their speed workouts during the winter months and occasionally at a predetermined location for a hill workout.
Are your group runs mostly casual or more structured workouts?
Mix of casual runs and structured workouts.
Any cost to be a member/join?
All but one of our run groups are FREE! We want EVERYONE to have the opportunity to start running, to continue running, and to learn to love running!
Our marathon/half marathon clinic is the only run group we have an associated cost to join due to the use of track facilities and extended store hours.
Is your group affiliated with any events?
Any cool routes/ favourite areas to run in your city that you would like to recommend to other runners? Why do you like those?
There are some great paved trails just outside the door of our store which are great for our run groups because they're smooth, mostly flat, and are maintained during the winter and have lights at night for those darker fall/winter evening runs!
We also have a contingent who love running to Bechtel Park and Breighaupt Park for a change of scenery and nice trails
Do you have any favourite local races? Outside of anything that you're affiliated with of course :)
Aside from the races we are more actively affiliated with, some of our favourites are:
- St John Ambulance Waterloo Marathon
- AHS Fun Run
- Superhero Run for KidsAbility
- Cambridge Mill Race
- New Hamburg Run for Relief
- Conquer the Canuck
Anything else that we should know?
Building community through running is very important to us and we aim to encourage everyone to get out, get active, and enjoy healthy lives!
