adidas Shamrock Run
The adidas Shamrock Run is the largest running and walking event in Portland, Oregon and second largest race in the Western United States. This race is one of the few in the Pacific Northwest to offer such a complete variety of distance options to racers including a 5k, 8k, 15k, and (new in 2015) a half marathon.
This race has a cap of 35,000 runners (2,500 cap on the half marathon) and does have a history of selling out. Runners who do get a spot in the Shamrock Run can expect to tackle a scenic urban course in and around downtown Portland amongst a sea of green clad racers.
The Shamrock Run features four main race courses.
5k & 8k Courses
The 5k and 8k courses follow a mainly flat loop around downtown Portland. Runners head North along the waterfront before looping back through downtown and finishing slightly below where the start area was. The courses are relatively flat, however, there is one small climb with about 1km to go (in both the 5k and 8k) so prepare to work a bit before you coast downhill to the finish.
15k & Half Marathon Courses
The 15k and half marathon courses follow the exact same start at the 5k and 8k routes, heading North along the water then cutting south through downtown. These routes extend south through Forest Park and will challenge runners with a long section (roughtly 7km) of sharp ups and downs through Terwilliger Hills (make sure you get that hill training in!). Once you're through that it's a gradual descent back through to downtown and the finish line.
