Five Must Run Vancouver Half Marathons
Vancouver locals are spoiled when it comes to the number of quality half marathon races that happen in and around the city each year. Here are five half marathons in Vancouver (well... four in Vancouver and one slightly outside of the city) that are worth putting in some training for.
The “first half” half marathon, put on by the Pacific Road Runners, is a fast and flat half marathon course that takes runners along the water through English Bay and around Stanley Park. This run features a very scenic route, and a talented field of runners. It also consistently sells out faster than any race in Vancouver, so if you want to run this half marathon make sure that you’re online the day that registration opens.
Perennially in contention for the best post race food of any half marathon (chili anyone?!), the Fall Classic is an annual half marathon (and 10k) that takes place up at UBC. This is a late season run so prepare for a variety of conditions, everything from rain, to clear skies, to snow and ice. The route is consistently gorgeous as participants get to run through the University Campus and along South West Marine Drive bordered by the endowment land forest and all of its fall colours.
The Seawheeze half marathon has quickly become one of Vancouver’s largest, and most popular halfs. It’s a well organized juggernaut of a race put on by Lululemon, and has one of the best possible race routes that one could ask for. Racers get a taste of the best of Vancouver with a route that goes through Gastown, False Creek, Kitsilano, Stanley Park (in reverse), and Coal Harbour. Couple that route with the regular Lulu cheer stations and it’s no surprise that this event has quickly attracted international attention.
The Scotiabank Vancouver Half Marathon is a rare straight shot half where runners start and finish in different locations. The race is on a net downhill course so get ready to see some smoking fast times put up by the top runners in the event, and a PR yourself if you fancy one! Canada Running Series hosts this event, and has made it a staple race for many top Vancouver running club members.
While not technically in Vancouver, the opportunity to run a half in Whistler is too good to pass up, and had to be included in this list. The Whistler Half Marathon is an iconic course that takes runners around some of the best spots in and around the town, all the while being shadowed by towering glacier capped peaks in the background. Plus it’s hard to think of a better place to be for post run after partying than Whistler village!
