Four Must Run Vancouver Marathons
Distance running begins as a test, but becomes a meditation. Marathon runners are consistently some of the most intense, centered, thrill-seeking, and dedicated people; but did they start that way, and that’s why they run so long? Or do they persist over pavement to find those qualities in themselves? Find out yourself by running one of these four must run marathons in Vancouver.
This run earns first place on our list by being named in the Forbes Top Marathons Worth Travelling For collection. This race starts at the top of Little Mountain at Queen Elizabeth Park, and continues through the city. Taking advantage of the perfect May weather, runners will be taken on a sight-seeing adventure through the neighborhoods, parks, and universities of Vancouver. The last leg of the race follows the natural beach line, and the sea breeze will refresh and revitalize participants so they can finish strong. Only 5,000 registrants can enter, so act now to claim your place!
Starting at the pristine Mill Lake Park in Abbotsford, runners will travel through the agricultural lands of Sumas Prairie. Winding roads, long grass, and vibrant flowers make this route the most meditative of the year. This calming run is well policed and free of traffic--no distractions, only forward. Set on a flat course, this is one of the fastest Boston qualifiers of the year, and all benefits go towards making clean water available in developing third world countries.
MEC Vancouver Marathon
A marathon for $25!!?! Yes, you just read that correctly. Twenty five dollars, that's not a typo. MEC has recently added a marathon distance event into their series of Vancouver races which launched in 2012. The outdoor retailer has promised to continue their tradition of community oriented events, with a grass roots feel. So don't expect to come away from the event with any fancy, branded custom running apparel. Instead, expect a well organized event with lots of friendly people and a great route!
Love beach running? Hate hills? This event travels the entire length of the ocean side trail of Boundary Bay, and is completely flat! Whether you’re looking to break your personal record (this is the last Boston qualifying race of the year) or just want to soak up the sea air and watch the leaves change, this cool fall race is a must. All proceeds go towards housing families of children with illness at the Ronald McDonald House British Columbia.
Whether you’re looking for your first marathon run, or your 50th, Vancouver is the place to be. From thrilling cultural experiences at the Surrey, to the ethereal meditation of the Run for Water, there’s a race to cater to every personality type. It’s hard to beat Vancouver during race season!
