5 Must Run Vancouver 5k Races
Vancouver’s mellow climate, and outdoor obsessed culture make it an excellent place for year round running. The city has well over forty 5k races that happen annually, giving runners looking for a short distance option plenty of choices. Here are a list of five Vancouver 5k races that you should check out!
Dave Reed 5k Spring Classic
This popular 5k race has been a Vancouver staple since 2005. It features a fast course through Stanley Park, and uses both the trails and the seawall giving runners a little taste of everything that the park has to offer! The Dave Reed 5k usually attracts a fast field of participants from local running clubs so if you’re looking to set a new 5k PR it won’t be hard to find a good pace bunny.
Editors Note: The Dave Reed 5K has been cancelled as of 2014 :(
The St. Patrick’s Day 5k is an annual Vancouver run that usually sells out with over 1,800 participants. It boasts one of the best post run after parties (usually happening at the Stanley Park Pavillion, and usually sponsored by a fine local brewery), and always features a good crowd of dressed up people. Don’t let the partying and green fool you though, this race attracts some of the city’s top talent so there’s some serious running to be had if you want.
While many of the 5k runs in Vancouver happen at Stanley Park, The Longest Day Road Race 5k takes place on the University of British Columbia grounds, giving racers a different perspective of the city. Runners also get a fairly unique end to the run, as they get to finish the race along the track in Thunderbird stadium. The Longest Day run usually has a cap of 1,500 entrants and tends to sell out before the event date every year.
The Pride Run & Walk is an annual Pride week kick off race that happens in July. This 5k (and 10k for those who want to go a bit longer) happens along a classic course in Stanley Park making it an excellent choice for runners looking for a fun summertime 5k race. Expect to see an eclectic mix of runners at this event, anything from costumed fun runners to runners going for their next PR.
MEC Running Series
In 2013 Mountain Equipment Co-op launched a Canada wide series of low cost running events. The distances range from race to race, but most of the runs have a 5k option. These events happen multiple times per year all over the Vancouver area. The events have a friendly, grassroots community type of vibe to them, as you would expect from something put on by MEC.
