Get to Know Your Running Clubs - West Van Run Crew
In this edition of Get to Know Your Running Clubs we chatted with Kirill Solovyev about the West Van Run Crew, a Vancouver running group that tends to rip all over the North Shore and of course, West Vancouver.
Want to learn more about them? Read on!
Tell us a bit about your crew's history
The first ever run crew was a group of 7 people... Nikki Baxendale, Shannon Banal, Karen Zen, Tracey Jackson, Paula Garcia, Shawna Pollreisz, and myself! We headed out for a run on June 27th, 2015, the founding day for the West Van Run Crew.
Since then we have done over 200 runs together. Not a single week has gone by without the crew getting together and heading out for a run!
Editors note: That's 200 runs as of October 2016
Nice! Tell us a bit about your members
West Van Run Crew is open to runners of all abilities. You can't be too fast or too slow to be running with us. The only thing that we’re looking for is for people to show up with a positive attitude and willingness to do their best and have fun.
Where/when do you usually meet?
We currently meet on Thursdays at 6:30 PM at the Village Taphouse at Park Royal, and on Saturdays at 9:30 AM, from Cafe Crema at Bellevue Ave & 15th Street.
I do highly recommend that you follow us on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/groups/westvanrun/) or instagram (https://www.instagram.com/westvanrun/) to get the most up to date information
Any cost to be a member/join?
None at all! It’s free to come run with us.
Are you affiliated with any events?
Yes! We’re affiliated with a couple great races in West Van. Both the West Van Run 5K and 10K, also the Ambleside Mile.
Where are your favourite spots to run in/around the city?
So many spots! Here are a few of my favourite routes
The West Vancouver Seawall. It's perfect for short easy runs. There are also plenty of coffee shops at both Dundarave and Ambleside Areas. In just 3-4 km you'll be able to cover most of West Vancouver's shoreline and find a ton of places for photo ops.
The Capilano Pacific Trail to Cleveland Dam and Back. Great trails that don't require any travelling to get to. The round trip is just over 7km and you get to experience some amazing local trails. The views of the mountains and Cleveland Dam at the turnaround point are breathtaking.
Lighthouse Park. This is one of Vancouver's top parks, featuring some fun trail loops that are a good fit for any type of runner. The park is usually very quiet and you rarely see people, which makes running and hiking there very enjoyable. It is also an awesome place for finding some picture-perfect views, and of course, for checking out the Lighthouse.
Anything else that we should know?
Make sure to be really nice to all the crew members and show support! Positive vibes only. If you plan on being grumpy (not that it’s ever happened), please stay at home haha! Also, all of our runs end with a social hour at Cafe Crema or Village Taphouse, so be ready to make friends with a ton of really nice people!
