2017 is just around the corner, and with the inevitable over-indulgence of the holiday season looming, what better way than to get a race or two on your calendar in the early months of the year. We've picked out a few of the best runs in January to help you get started, from your typical 5K, to the downright unconventional!

This New Year’s Day run is a 5K with a difference! Runners will make their way through Grant Park, before running the fast, downhill final stretch onto the beach, crossing the finish line… and straight into Lake Michigan for an (optional) cold, refreshing dip! We’ve never seen a race quite like this before...

Named in honor of one of its most famous residents, Samson the silverback gorilla, the Samson Stomp takes place at Milwaukee Zoo. The 5K run is two loops of the circuit, giving you plenty chance to get a glimpse of the animals! There’s also a 2 Mile fun run, as well as a Kids dash, meaning there are options for everyone.

A two-lapper around Fox River in beautiful Frame Park, this is a super-flat, super-fast course with a total elevation change of just 6 feet, making this perfect PR material!

 

Icebreaker Marathon & Half Marathon (+ Marathon Relay and 5K)

Date: January 27-29, 2017
Distance: Marathon, Half Marathon, Marathon Relay, 5K

This truly unique event takes place at the Pettit National Ice Center in Milwaukee, where runners line up on a two-lane indoor track on the perimeter of the ice rink! There’s a full and half marathon, a marathon relay and a 5K over the course of the event, which runs from Friday to Sunday. Expect to brush shoulders and hustle for position in this one!
