Hi Pete! Who are you? Give us your best one line bio
Hi there! I’m a Runner and the Running Club Web Guru.
Tell us a bit about the club history
Earliest anyone can remember is that Tammi Ellis and Angie Anderson did some running clinics in Cochrane in 1996 or 1997. Shortly after that the club was formed to allow the clinic participants to keep on training as a group.
The Wayback Machine at the internet archive of the Red Rock Runners website starts in late 2003 and runs to the present. Bruce Robin created the first website, and back then we were hardy runners, Angie’s clinics started in late February! We also had our own Iron Yogi — Trevor Dickson — offering yoga sessions for runners.
Nice! Tell us a bit about your members, what level of runners typically run with you?
We are primarily a social group with a running problem. Some members race over all distances from indoor track 1,000 meter races up to ultra marathons and 24 hour trail races like the death race. Most members however are non-competitive and happy to just run 8 to 12km on the paths around Cochrane.
Some of our members are competitive in their age groups, but most are happy to be out in the open air running. Midweek we offer a Fun Training Group with a focus on race preparation. Focus for April and May is to get ready for the outdoor 5K and 10K races, so lots of drills and hills, plus tempo running together with building base mileage. As we move into summer, we build distance for 10K races in September, and then start our transition to speedwork for the indoor track series that runs December – January. We then transition to base building to get ready for harder training once April rolls around.
We also offer a "Run To Footstock" clinic every spring to get people off the couch and prepared for the Footstock 5K or 10K in early June.
Where/when do you usually meet and run?
Cochrane Coffee Traders at 8:30AM Saturdays and Sundays, Cochrane Health and Fitness club 6:30PM Tuesdays and Thursdays
Any cost to be a member/join?
$15/year, but club membership is not required to join in on our runs. The benefit of becoming a member is that we are be able to email you with last minute changes, plus membership has some other benefit from local sponsors.
Are you affiliated with any events?
Many members of the club volunteer for the Cochrane "Footstock" races in early June, but the two organizations although sharing a lot of membership are kept distinct entities.
Where are your favourite spots to run in/around the city?
Cochrane Ranche has some great trails for beginners, and a 19K run out and back to visit wineglass ranch is a great training route for those training for marathons and half marathons. Glenbow Ranch provincial park has some great maintained trails as long as you enjoy hills.
Do you have any favourite races? Outside of anything that you’re affiliated with :)
The University of Calgary puts on a great indoor series of races over the winter http://uofcathletics.ca/dino-indoor-track-series/ and we often have quite a few runners doing the Dino Dash at the University in early September. The MEC race series in Calgary is also popular with our members.
Anything else that we should know?
The only way to run solo on our group runs is to head out too fast. We try to make sure that nobody ever falls off the back of the run, even if that means a few runners do an easy 5K loop and then head out for another faster loop
The only hazard for new runners joining in with our runs is that they might discover they are spending longer in the coffee shop talking after the run than they did on the run itself. But that often occurs for our regular runners after a Saturday morning 10K
