In this edition of Get To Know Your Running Clubs we spoke with Black Lungs Toronto, a performance-based running club that values commitment, competition and camaraderie. You'll most often find Black Lungs Toronto running year-round through all parts of the city.

Hi Black Lungs Toronto! What area(s) of the city does your group usually run in/around?

Given that we run year-round and often cover long distances, we end up covering a fair amount of the city on some of our runs. That said, we do have out favourite routes which include High Park and then out-and-back along the MGT (Lakeshore trail) or the Humber Valley. We also run the Don Valley trails and the Beltline quite a bit too as will hit up Riverdale, Monach Park (in winter) and the Central Tech track for workouts. Poplar Plains is our go-to hill workout spot.

Tell us a bit about your club history, how long has the club been around?

The club formally began in 2013 when a small group of us left another club to start something entirely our own. We were basically a training group of a dozen or so guys that wanted to avoid the bureaucracy and politics of a larger club (FYI we still have those things but now on a smaller scale).

Tell us a bit about your members! What level of runners do you cater to?

We are all serious, albeit entirely amateur (i.e. not even close to elite) runners who run primarily on the roads and train for longer distances like the half- and marathon. One of our primary objectives is to run, train and race as a group and as such, we ensure that everyone is at a similar ability.

Where/when does your club usually meet/run?

We meet on Thursday evenings for workouts and Sunday mornings for long runs. The start locations and times vary between east, west and central depending on the length and type of workout we're doing.

Are your group runs mostly casual or more structured workouts?

Mostly structured workouts.

Any cost to be a member/join?

Nope, we are entirely free to join assuming you can keep up.

Is your group affiliated with any events?

We host an annual event called the Longest Day Ekiden Relay in June which invites running clubs and teams from Toronto and beyond to participate in a fun (but also fast) team relay event.

Any cool routes/ favourite areas to run in your city that you would like to recommend to other runners? Why do you like those?

The MGT/Lakeshore trail is an incredible way to see and experience Toronto's waterfront. It spans right across the southern part of the city and runs from Etobicoke in the west, right through the heart of downtown and all the way to Scarborough in the east. The Don and Humber Valley trail systems are also great for running and training and if you want to run really long, you can connect them all by running the Beltline.

Do you have any favourite local races? Outside of anything that you're affiliated with of course :)

We definitely have a few favourites. Every year we head to Burlington for the historic Robbie Burns 8K in January and we also enjoy the Chilly Half and historic Around the Bay 30K as part of our spring racing season (which often concludes with the Boston Marathon). The Pride 5K in June and the Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon in October are two other local events we always enjoy being a part of.
