Get to Know Your Running Clubs - MEC Victoria Run Crew
In this edition of Get To Know Your Running Clubs we spoke with MEC Victoria Run Crew Leader Andrew McCartney and MEC Victoria In-Store Programmer Caitlin Brown. You'll most often find the MEC Victoria Run Crew running around Victoria's pathways and trails, along the Gorge Inlet, up Moss Rocks, across the trestle to the Galloping Goose Trail. The city core is their playground!

Our crew formed in 2013. We meet every Tuesday night at 6pm and every Saturday morning at 9am, rain or shine, on the MEC Victoria Bike Patio!
Tell us a bit about your members! What level of runners do you cater to?
This crew is open to runners of all abilities!
Where/when does your club usually meet/run?
We meet at the MEC Victoria Bike Patio (1450 Government St).
Are your group runs mostly casual or more structured workouts?
Mostly casual runs.
Any cost to be a member/join?
Is your group affiliated with any events?
The MEC Victoria Race Series.
Are there any other run events that your crew likes to do other than the MEC Victoria race series?
With our unique MEC run series, we attract a large range of runners from National Team runners and first time racers. The same can be said about our Run Crews. We encourage our members to participate in many different events in the community. This includes the Times Colonist 10km, the Royal Victoria Marathon and the Island Race Series. Our goal is to encourage people to get out, run with friends and get fit!
Are there any routes that you love to run?
The wonderful thing about Victoria is there are so many options for running in the downtown core. Some classics include High Rock Park in Esquimalt, the 7 sisters in Fairfield (a series of hills) and my personal favorite Dallas Road including the Breakwater.
Why do you like them?
The variety. The coastline is beautiful. Dallas Road or running along the inner-harbor are stunning. With trails that follow the coast it is sometimes hard to stay focused on the road ahead as you find yourself staring off with hopes of seeing a pod of whales. We climb our way to the top of High Rock Park and name off what you can see... Downtown, Mt. Findlayson, Mt Doug and of course the Olympic Mountains.
Anything else we should know?
We have sometimes been referred to as "The outsiders" not based on the 1983 drama but because we are all outsiders, getting out enjoying nature, having fun with fellow runners and sharing our experience. "Good times Outside!" is a Motto we like to go by at MEC and the Run Crews follow this Motto.
