Get to Know Your Running Clubs - Moms RUN This Town York Region

In this edition of Get To Know Your Running Clubs we spoke with Barbara Prud'homme, co-organizer along with Nadia Lamothe of the York Region - Moms RUN This Town & She Runs This Town. The Moms RUN This Town club welcomes any skill level of runner and jokes "we don’t claim to be the ‘fastest’ just the ‘funnest’". Whether you are a walker hoping to start training for your first 5k or an experienced runner training for a marathon – we would love to have you as part of our community.

Hi Barbara! Tell us a bit about your club history!

The online group has been around for around 8 years, but it has grown and become a more vibrant and active community in the past two or three years. Moms RUN This Town is a running club for moms to support and motivate you in your running journey! It doesn't matter if you are a walker or a runner, someone who has never raced before or a marathoner, a mom to humans or a mom to pets...we just want to surround you with like-minded women who have a passion for staying healthy!!

Tell us a bit about your membership? What level of runners do you cater to?

We have runners of all ages, stages and paces! Right now, there are just under 60 members in the York Region group online, and about 15 or so who will meet up regularly for runs. Different ladies are training for different goals and distances, from a 5k to a half Iron Man. Our paces range from 5:00 min/km to just over 7:00 min/km, and we welcome all levels of ability. I think it's wonderful that no matter where you are, you can put out a call for someone to join you on a run and will often be able to find a few friends at or near your pace to join you!

Where/when does your club usually meet/run?

We most often meet on Saturday or Sunday mornings for our long runs, which usually begin at around 8:00-9:00am in Newmarket. If people want company for a mid-week run, they are free to post their plans with the online group.

Any cost to be a member/join?

Nope. Our hopes are that we can provide a fun club for moms (and really ANY woman – not just moms) to get together, run/walk/jog and socialize. We provide an online community built of moms who help answer running questions, encourage each other, train with each other and share their personal running experiences. People can find more info and reach the Facebook group at: www.facebook.com/groups/yorkregionmrtt/

Any cool routes/favourite areas to run in your city that you would like to recommend to other runners?

We are lucky to have a great road and trail network here in Newmarket. We often run on the Nokiidaa and Tom Taylor Trails, which are beautiful, mostly flat and generally well maintained. I'd recommend these spots to anyone!

Do you have any favourite local races? Outside of anything that you're affiliated with of course :)

12 of our members had an absolute blast doing Ragnar Niagara last year - we're already thinking about doing another one (2018 race date is June 1st). We have also loved the 5 Peaks trail runs, and many of us will take part in local races like Scotiabank, the Toronto Women's Series ($5 off registration with a RunGuides coupon code for this one) and others around Toronto that the group partakes in.

Anything else that we should know?

If you have a running goal you're trying to reach, you're in the Toronto York Region area and you want the company of other dedicated runners to share the journey with? Come try us out!

Thanks for chatting with us, Barbara! Want to learn more?
