Get To Know Your Running Clubs: XSNRG
In this edition of Get to Know Your Running Clubs we chatted with John Petrosoniak about the XSNRG Running Club. John has been the President of XSNRG Running Club since 1995. He is also the Race Director of the club's annual trail race called the Mad Dog Scramble. You’ll find him out at most club workouts…. unless he’s out of town!

Tell us a bit about your club history and membership
The club has existed since 1988, starting out quite informally. The essence of the club is interval workouts on Tuesday evenings at 6:30. Rain or shine.
We typically have upwards of 100 members and no one is too fast or slow to run with us, as long as the runner can run approximately 5 kms. Our motto is fast, faster, fastest. Whether one runs to race or just for pleasure, training with us will improve one's stamina, speed and strength.
Where/when do you usually meet?
From the beginning of May until the end of September we meet in parking lot next to the pavilion in Sunnybrook Park. From the first Tuesday in October until the end of April weeper at Leaside High School in the lower hallway, above the gym.
You can find the most up to date information on the club website - www.xsnrg.org
Any cost to be a member/join?
Our fees are $45 for the year and this pays for insurance, cost of the school rental, socials and we also give away something different each year. This year it is s microfibre towel to dry off after s workout and to put on a car seat. Last year it was a jacket. It had been anything from a hat to t-shirt to towel to jacket.
Are you affiliated with any events?
Our annual race is the Mad Dog Scramble, held on the last Sunday of October at Park Lane Public School. We often help out at various races in town and support the annual Terry Fox Run in September. Darrell Fox was one of our devoted runners for many years before moving back to BC.
Where are your favourite spots to run in/around the city?
One of our favourite long runs (20kms) starts at Edwards Gardens, follows the trails in Wilket Creek Park, Serena Gundy and Taylor Creek. We loop around Victoria Park and Dawes and then run back the same way. A number of us meet informally on Saturday morning to run that loop.
Do you have any favourite races? Outside of anything that you’re affiliated with of course :)
Any of the Excel Running Series as well as the 5 Peaks trail runs are very popular and well attended by members.
Anything else that we should know?
Running is a lifestyle our members are attracted to and dedicate themselves to. Consistency and perseverance are hallmarks of those who come out regularly. This helps them, and can help all runners, in their training.
