Get To Know Your Running Clubs: K2J Fitness
In this edition of Get to Know Your Running Clubs we chatted Judy Andrew Piel about the K2J Fitness Running Club, a group based out of Barrhaven Ontario (just a 30K run from downtown Ottawa). Judy is one of the group’s co-founders and coaches.
At the time of this article Judy has run 30 marathons, including 12 at Boston. She has also competed at the World Ironman Championships, the World 70.3 Championships and the World Duathlon Championships. She has been coaching for around 10 years, and I founded K2J Fitness with JR Tremblay, (who, in her words, comes from a military running background and has been coaching even longer than she has!) in 2008.

Tell us a bit about your club history and membership
We started the group in 2008. Eight hardy runners did speed work in the snow! The group has grown over the years there are now 50-60 of us doing speed work in the snow, the ice, the rain and the heat. We generally have a group of more than 20 at the Boston Marathon each year and most years we plan a destination fall marathon. This year we are going to Philadelphia. There are 350 members on our weekly update list.
Our members are mostly over 30 (although we do have a few younger runners) . We have some fast masters runners but not everyone is speedy. What everyone does have in common is a desire to work hard and to run their best. At this time we do not have a learn to run program so new runners should be able to complete a 5k.
Where/when do you usually meet?
We do one group workout a week. In the summer we run on the track. In winter we find clear pavement and do speed work on that. We meet at 6:15 on Tuesdays at Bushtukah 203 Richmond Rd or Thursdays at Barrhaven Source for Sports.
You can find the most up to date information on the club website - www.k2jfitness.com
Any cost to be a member/join?
Yes. JR Tremblay or myself are there to coach at every workout and we do personalized schedules for all runners. We charge by the session. It's $40-$130 depending on the session length which is 4-16 weeks.
Are you affiliated with any events?
We put on a 5K for members, family and friends once a year and we volunteer as a group at local events from time to time.
Where are your favourite spots to run in/around the city?
If you are visiting Ottawa running along the Ottawa River Parkway or the Rideau Canal is a must do. You can even run on the canal itself in winter. Ottawa has lots of great pathways for running and cycling. If trail running is your thing check out Gatineau Park. The pathways are great because they are car free, scenic and in the case of the canal there are lots of other runners to keep you company.
Do you have any favourite races? Outside of anything that you’re affiliated with of course :)
- The Scotiabank Canada Day Road Races are well run. They have a 5k and a 10k but the 100m tot trot is the most fun to watch.
- The Ottawa Race Weekend which is a world class event
- The Mad Trapper Snowshoe Series, which is a fantastic just for fun event!
