Get to Know Your Running Clubs - DC Capital Striders

In this edition of Get to Know Your Running Clubs we chatted with the President/Founder Rick Amernick about the DC Capital Striders.

Tell us a bit about your club history, how long has the club been around?

The club was established in 2006 and has members across the District, Virginia, and Maryland.

Tell us a bit about your membership? What level of runners do you cater to?

We bring together runners of all different abilities. 

Where/when does your club usually meet/run?

We have weekly group runs every day, both morning and evenings. Long distance runs are offerred Saturday mornings. Checkout our website for locations and times.  

What part of the city does your group usually run in/around?

Washington DC, Northern Virginia, and Maryland.

Any cool routes/ favourite areas to run in your city that you would like to recommend to other runners? Why do you like those?

So many to choose from:

Washington DC (roads and trails) - Mount Vernon Trail, Rock Creek Park
Northern VA (roads and trails) - Great Falls Park, W & OD Trail, Lake Accotink, Custis Trail
Maryland (roads and trails) - Great Falls Park, Capital Crescent Trail

Any cost to be a member/join?

It is free to run with the group. We have optional paid membership with perks including discounts to many running related products, nutrition companies, gyms, and race discounts. Members can participate in monthly raffles to win free race entries.

Is your group affiliated with any events?

We organize an anual Holiday Lights Run, for more info checkout our website.

Anything else that we should know?

The DC Capital Striders vision is to bring together runners of all abilities. We organize non-competitive group runs, schedule social events, volunteer at many local races, host fitness/educational seminars on various running related topics, and organize races/other events for various charities.

We strive to provide our runners with an opportunity to meet others to train with; encourage runners to give back to the running community, and provide an atmosphere where every runner is accepted in a non-threatening, non-competitive atmosphere.
