In this edition of Get to Know Your Running Clubs we chatted with the Coordinator of the DC Front Runners Rob Geremia.

Tell us a bit about your club history, how long has the club been around?

DC Front Runners is a running, walking, and social club serving Washington DC's LGBTQ community and their friends since 1981. We are one out of over 100 LGBTQ Front Runners clubs in the world. You can learn more about our club’s history at www.dcfrontrunners.org/timeline

Tell us a bit about your membership? What level of runners do you cater to?

We are open to all people regardless of race, pace, age, gender, sexual orientation, or athletic ability. Our group is very diverse with respect to speed, distance, and intensity, and we encourage and support all who participate. While membership is encouraged, you do not have to join to give us a try! Visitors are always welcome to attend one of our fun runs or walks.

Our club has over 300 active members. In addition to our group runs and walks, we sponsor many social events so you can make new friends and join other members for dinner, happy hour, or other activities.

Where/when does your club usually meet/run?

Tuesdays & Thursdays at P and 23 Streets, NW at 7:00pm;
Saturdays at P and 23 Streets, NW at 10:00 am;
Sundays at P and 23 Streets, NW at 9:00 am.

During the Autumn and Winter months we change our Tuesday evening runs to Union Station at 7:00 pm.

In the months of July and August, our Saturday runs meet at 9:00 am at P and 23 Streets, NW.

In April, the DC Front Runners offer a Spring Track program.

Any cool routes/ favourite areas to run in your city that you would like to recommend to other runners? Why do you like those?

While our National Mall route is a signature Washington DC running experience, the club also enjoys running in other parts of our city. For instance, we love running along the historic C&O canal during the hot summer months because the route offers shade! Large segments of our Rock Creek Park running route feels like you're running through the wilderness, even though you are in the middle of a big city.

Any cost to be a member/join?

$25 for the year; $10 for students; $40 for households.

Is your group affiliated with any events?

In June, we sponsor the DC Front Runners Pride Run 5K at Historic Congressional Cemetery.

Do you have any favourite local races? Outside of anything that you're affiliated with of course :)

Many of our members run the Cherry Blossom Ten Miler and the Rock and Roll DC Marathon, Half-Marathon, and 5K.

Anything else that we should know?

We hold special runs on Federal Holidays at 10:00 am. The DC Front Runners also host a monthly Happy Hour on the first Friday of each month.
